Merry Christmas everyone! Its just past mid-Christmas Day while I write this over in the Sandbox and I wanted to take a few minutes to share some thoughts. For starters I appreciate all the comments, emails, and instant messages from everyone who reads this blog. At times when I may be at odds with Public Affairs over what is a post-able entry and what isn't, the support I've received makes it a fight worth fighting. I know some would prefer I wrote about the company in general, or be more platoon specific, but as the title states this blog is about my experiences since mobilization...I'm just surprised there are so many who think its worth reading.
In keeping with traditions I'd like to give a brief list of things I am thankful for not just this holiday season but every day. Please keep in mind that I am listing these in random order, not by priority.
- The men and women in uniform, regardless of country or creed. I am truly blessed to come from a nation where there are enough people willing to answer the call that my loved ones do not have to do the things we do, unless its by their choice.
- All the support our military receives from people back home, not just our loved ones. As we sadly learned during the Vietnam era, support from our nation is vital not just for our morale but also for helping to heal any wounds we may suffer while away.
- Freedom. Having had the chance to meet and learn about other cultures constantly reinforces to me how lucky I am to be from the land of the free. Despite what some may think, it amuses me when people in the States complain about things in life...especially how much they feel the government controls it. If only they knew how lucky they have it, but I am thankful they'll never have to endure finding out the hard way.
- My family. They may not understand why I do what I do, or agree with it, but they are there for me when it really matters. If not for my parents' willingness to care for my kids while I am over here I wouldn't be able to do my part as a soldier. Thank you Mom and Dad.
For those wondering, today is pretty much just another day for me, only with better food at the DFAC (Dining FACility). General David Petraeus was at the DFAC last night. Fortunately word got the barracks before I got the chow hall so I opted for Hardee's instead. Already had one general ruin a holiday meal last deployment didn't see any point in letting another ruin one this deployment...even if the man is someone to look up to in my eyes.
Everyone have a merry Christmas, and be safe.
