R&R Leave StitRep

Not sure what all is happening militarily right now as I'm blissfully spending my time back in wonderful North Iowa. It's been a fun time so far!

The trip from Kuwait to home wasn't too bad, could've done without the usual waiting that seems to be incorporated into anything military run. The flights went by quickly, due largely in part to my body decided it was a perfect time to catch up on some much needed sleep. Unlike the trip East, I have no idea what any of the in-flight movies were...and that is just fine by me.

I am happy to say my kids are still quite wound-up over me being home, and that makes risking the loss of my assigned truck more than worth it. As luck would have it this week has been Spring Break for the local schools so I have had plenty of time to spend with the kids. I lost track of how many board games we've played and TV shows they wanted me to watch with them. If all goes well next weekend we'll be able to catch a good movie at the older-style theatre in Clear Lake. I still prefer the traditional single screens to the newer, impersonal multiplexes. Just something about the style of the old theatres that give them "character". However some of the newer retro-style places are nice and have their own charm...but I digress.

The first night home I was back into the swing of things with the kids. Answering endless questions, making sure they got to bed on time, and reading some books to them before said bedtime. I've been lucky enough in the mornings to be able to cook breakfast, and I apparently make the best omelets in Iowa...pretty sure I can out-do the guys in Taji that make the best omelets in Iraq.

While the temperatures have been cold, the skies today are nice and sunny. This has lead me to the conclusion that its time to bundle up a bit, and drop the top on the Jeep. We get some odd looks, but we're having fun and that's the only thing that matters.

As soon as word spread I was back my phone started ringing off the hook with people wanting me to visit. Unfortunately there isn't enough time to see everyone, but most are understanding enough to know that my time with the kids comes first.

The only real downside to being home is waiting for a special someone's schedule to clear enough that I can spend time with her. Being unable to see someone because I am overseas is one thing, but the frustration and impatience from being only an hour's drive and not being able to see them is infinitely worse. This week has some promising days to it, and I'm looking forward to them like a young kid does Christmas. If I have learned anything from this deployment so far, it is good things come to those who wait, and to cherish each moment as if its the last...because there's always the chance it could be.

Other than kids and that certain visit, my only plans are to kick back, relax, and the occasional Spring Cleaning...although I very much miss being on the road. I think this is the longest I've sat at one location in almost six months!

In short, things are going well and I'm happy.

Be safe!
